The Project Group.

The Society is fortunate in having a very active group of willing volunteers, who spend many hours transcribing Census and Parish Register details, checking them twice, before then producing them in booklet form, or in some cases on CD-ROM.

So far, the project group has completed the 1841 and 1851 Censuses for whole of our area, and there are a great number of Parish Registers completed, but still many more to do. Additional volunteers are always welcome, and training will of course be provided.

The society has also taken part in the Nation Burials Index (NBI) project, coordinated by Alwyn Gee, and will be publishing Transcripts as they are completed.

Individuals can do their own surname search on the 1841 Census and  1851 Census, via the website. You can check the list of surnames found on the census at surnames in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. The list of Surnames in the 1841 and 1851 censuses also includes the number of times that the surname appears in the census.

The society also offers a research service , utilising all of our transcriptions, our extensive data and library collection.

It is important that anyone using this facility states the specific surname and its variants, to be searched for. We do not undertake to deduce the various spellings of a surname so they must be stated. For common surnames, it is advisable, to include forenames
